Judgment creates refinement.
Expensive can happen in a single afternoon with the right budget.
Refinement takes longer.
It requires knowing which decisions do the quiet work: the proportion of a doorway, the way light arrives at a certain hour, the density of a material against the hand.
A room built only from expensive choices can still make people uncomfortable, and they will not know why.
A refined room does not announce its cost.
It makes the person inside feel the space was made for them.
Expensive and refined are not the same thing.
